Explanation:

It was late December in Cincinnati. Extremely cold. Me and my friends were getting bored. One of them suggested that there is this Christmas Village nearby, a small farm kind of area that is decorated with Christmas lights and music. We decided to head there.

We were all sitting at the farm around a huge bonfire. I had some Pakistani friends and we always used to discuss how we ‘Desis’ look Garib(poor), no matter how much we earn or how well we dress. It was kind of an inside joke.

While we were chatting and getting warm around the bonfire, one friend(A) who is originally from Islamabad bent down to tie his shoelaces. When he looked up, an American lady made eye contact with him. She was eating funnel cake, and she out of courtesy offered him.

“Care to have some?”

“No, thank you”, my friend replied.

Later while returning, I had this idea of playing a prank.

“A, do you know why that nice lady offered you cake?”, I asked.

“No that was strange though!”, he replied.

“Well you might not have noticed, but when she was eating, she dropped a piece, and you bent right after. She thought you were looking for that piece. That is why she offered out of pity.”, I replied, trying hard not to laugh.

“What the hell man, I was just tying my shoe laces.”

“Well, I know that, you know that, but she did not” I said.

“Oye nahi yaar, aisa mat bol” (Please don’t say that’s true), He was bewildered.

My friends were nodding with me in agreement.

One of them quipped. “She must have thought that you’re some hungry, poor guy from a third world country.”

Another one said, “She must have watched Slumdog Millionaire.”

We all were giggling and he had such a look on his face, I cannot explain that in words.

To this day, he believes that some American lady pitied him and offered him food.

No, I am not going to tell the truth anytime soon
