Story:

The Canterville Ghost story is around a countryside  house in England (long time ago).  That is an interesting and quite a dramatic ghost story about a haunted house.  He describes the house very well in that.  He blended comedy in to the story very well.

Mr Otis and his family (his wife, daughter Virginia, son Washington) are Americans from New York. They just shift  to the house named "canterville Chase", even after being warned of it being haunted.   They did not believe in ghosts.   They hear a lot of sounds, see blood on the floor many times etc. They started believing in ghosts, but they still were not afraid of them.   The name of the ghost was Sir Simon de Canterville.

The ghost becomes humiliated and feels terrible, as he could not make the family frightened.  The family talks of detergents and stain removers when they see mysterious red marks (resembling blood) on the floor.  The various desperate attempts of Sir Simon and the response behaviour of the family are narrated with a lot of humour.   Sir Simon changes forms and assumes many roles  like: strangeld girl, blood-suc ker, skeleton and corpse snatcher, headless person etc.   Instead of frightening the family, he himself gets beaten every time.  He falls over tripwires, slips on butter, takes on his head bucketfuls of water.  He even gets shocked by seeing a ghost  (created by Otis twins).

Sir Simon comes close and feels good with young Virginia in her teens.  He tells her the story of his wife.  She is serious and believing and not mischievous like other members of the family.   She listens to him sympathetically.   He requests her to pray for him and weep for him, as he is unable to do those (because ghosts cannot weep or pray).   He requests her  to accompany him to the God of Death to show mercy on him.   She does so.  She disappears with the ghost in the evening.  Every one searches for her and becomes worried where she disappeared.  Then ghost is relieved of his ghost state and goes to Godly world.  She returns to the house later in the night.   Every one feels very happy on seeing her back.  Virginia recounts the story of what happened.  Now the house is free of the ghost.  Everyone is happy.  They congratulate her and also feel nice about everything.

Critical comments:

The Ghost of Canterville is a short novel written in 1906 by the famous writer Oscar Wilde.  It is published by John W. Luce and Co. (Boston and London).  There are very good illustrations of profiles and situations sketched by Wallace Goldsmith.  I liked the narration style very much.  One could read the story in peace lying on the bed in the night and really experience all the horror and humour in the story.  The story also contains some old phrases and vocabulary that makes it interesting to read.  The story is relevant to 20th century as the superstitions of ghosts still existed in many countries including India.

The story describes the character of minister Otis, who is adamant in living in the house.  The peculiar and intelligent behaviour of bold children is also illustrated, as they get over the fear and ignore the ghost.  The description of the house, rooms and decorations also is done well.  The dialogues show really the feelings of the speakers and we could feel them as we read on.  The products and methods to remove blood stains that Otis thinks of are interesting.  The idea of outwitting a ghost is new.

The kind heart of Virginia reflects the typical nature of women in their teens.  She helps the ghost like an angel and draws the story to its end.  In many ghost stories we hear of murders and revenges.  Here there are humour, playfulness, sadness and pity.

The novel reflects very well the living conditions, culture and family relations prevalent during that period.  One does not feel any artificiality anywhere.
