When I was in class 5th in school (nearly 10 years old), I was selected to perform the role of a teacher for the morning assembly. I never missed a practice session and worked very hard for my part. The role required me to be clad in a saree. So, the day before the function (or say, the morning assembly), I arranged for a saree and other accessories, and kept everything ready from my side for the next day. I was very excited about it.
(A brief background - At that time, I had this habit of waking up at the time that was just enough for me to get ready for school. I had time neither for breakfast nor for any extra activity. Although my mom tried her best to wake me up a early, but all in vain.)
So, on the day of the function, my mom started waking me up an hour before the usual time so that I can get ready with my attire for the day. Owing to my usual habit of waking up just in time, and knowing that all my things are set aside, I decided to go in for that “5 more minutes of sleep”. Then I finally got out of bed at my usual time (with just enough time to get ready) and started with the chores at the usual pace. (Snap) Just then I realized that I’ll have to go to my neighbour’s house so that I can get the saree draped by my Aunt (My mom had never worn a saree so she didn’t know how to drape it). I started panicking that very moment. I upped my pace and rushed to her house, but till then it was quite late. As a result, my school van left and I then had to go to school with my dad [I had to wake him up and request him to take me to school because the van had left, yet again ;-)]. I was already very late when I reached the school premises. The school captain was there to stop me as a late-comer, but seeing me clad in a saree she understood that I was a part of the morning assembly. So, she didn’t stop me and I started running towards the Auditorium (almost in tears, praying that I don’t fall on the way because of the long saree). As soon as I entered the auditorium, everyone started looking at me as I rushed towards backstage. And the moment I reached there, I realized that my part was already over. Seeing my class-teacher there, I literally broke down. She came up to me and consoled me saying it was alright. I was so embarrassed at that moment, that all I could do was cry and say “sorry mam” after every second.
That was literally the most embarrassing moment of my life. I surely learnt a lesson on punctuality that day, which I haven’t forgotten even today, and I’m pretty much sure I won’t forget it the rest of my life.
