→ Algae are aquatic, occur in both marine as well as fresh water. Some algae grow under very special environmental conditions like on ice and snow, on the surface of other plants and animals etc.

→ A layer of mucilage is present on them which protects them from dessication when exposed to air.

→ They reproduce by vegetative, asexual and sexual methods.

→ The algal thalli are flexible to move with the water tides without being torn.

→ Algae are of three types; Red algae, Brown algae and Green algae.

`\textbf{1. Red Algae}`

* Mostly marine.

* Unicellular forms very few.

* Chlorophyll a and d are present.

* Reserved food material is floridean starch.

* Motile and flagellated bodies are absent.

`\textbf{2. Brown Algae}`

* Mostly marine.

* Unicellular forms are absent.

* Chlorophyll a and c are present.

* Reserved food material is laminarin.

* Motile and flagellated bodies are present.

`\textbf{3. Green Algae}`

* Mostly fresh water.

* Unicellular forms abundant.

* Chlorophyll a and b are present.

Algae (one alga, but several algae) are a type of plant-like living things that can make food from sunlight by photosynthesis. The study of algae is called phycology or algology.

The term lumps together many different kinds of organisms. They have in common only that they are autotrophic: they use natural sources of energy and simple inorganic materials to build their forms. As non-vascular plants they do not have the kind of cell and tissuestructure of land plants. They are a convenient but very loose term. Only in recent years has it become clear how different the many kinds of algae are.
