Chemotaxonomy:
It is method of biological classificationbbased on similarities and differences in structure of certain compounds present among the organisms being classified. In short, it is the classification based on chemical constituents of organisms. e.g. Archaea cell wall is without peptidoglycan and that of Prokarya is with peptidoglycan. Among Eukarya, fungi have chitinous cell wall while plants have cellulosic cell wall.

- It is the classification of plants and animals based on similarities and differences in their composition.
- John Griffith Vaughan was one of the pioneers of chemo taxonomy
- The body of any animal in the animal kingdom is made up of a number of chemicals.
- Of these, only a few biochemical products have been taken into consideration to derive evidence for evolution.
- Novel classifications based on metabolic analysis are thus highly desirable.
- It helps trace their ancestors and form connecting links.
- Pigments, toxins, and other secondary metabolites, lichens, and other large, fleshy, or sclerotial fungi are widely accepted as constant characteristics and therefore reliable markers for identification
