The Clemmensen Reduction allows us to reduce aldehydes or ketones, to produce a hydrocarbon.
The Clemmensen Reduction is complementary to the Wolff-Kishner Reduction.

Wolff-Kishner Reduction is used for the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to alkanes. Condensation of the carbonyl compound with hydrazine forms the hydrazone, and treatment with base induces the reduction of the carbon coupled with oxidation of the hydrazine to gaseous nitrogen, to yield the alkane.

Wolff-Kishner reduction is complementary to Clemmensen reduction, which also converts aldehydes and ketones to hydrocarbons, in that the former is carried out in strongly basic.

☆The Clemmensen reduction is an organic reaction used to reduce an aldehyde or ketone to an alkane using amalgamated zinc and hydrochloric acid.
