COAL

Coal was formed by the decomposition of large land plants and trees buried in under the earth about 300 million years ago.

The slow process by which the dead plants buried deep under the earth have become coal is called carbonisation.

Coal is a source of energy

Coal is important because it can be used as a source of heat energy.

Products of coal

Coal gas , coal tar , coke are called products of coal.

The strong heating of coal in the absence of air is called destruction distillation of coal.

Different types of things are prepared by using coal generally , by heating them upto higher temperatures.

\Large\text{COAL-}

  • Coal is a mineral of dark brown or black colour.
  • It is a very impure form of carbon
  • It mainly consist of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and small amounts of nitrogen and sulphur.
  • It is obtained from coal mines found in WB, MP, Jharkhand.

\Large\text{FORMATION-}

  • It is formed due to natural processes like floods, earthquakes, volcanoes which caused dense forests to be buried under the soil.
  • They got compressed under layers of soil and due to high temperature and pressure the dead vegetation got converted into coal in many years.
  • Since coal is a fuel obtained from dead remains of plants , it is called a fossil fuel.

\Large\text{Destuctive distillation of coal-}

  • The process of heating coal in the absence of air toobtain useful products is called destructive distillation of coal.
  • The various useful products obtained are :
  1. Coke
  2. coal gas
  3. coal tar
  4. ammonical liquor
