Ploughing is done at right angles to the hill slope, following the natural contours of the hill. It makes the ridges and furrows break the flow of water down the hill. As gullies are less, this prevents excessive soil loss. It is likely to develop and reduce run-off so that plants receive more water.

Soil erosion is the detachment, transportation, and deposition of soil particles. Natural erosion is generally slow, keeping pace with soil formation rates. However, human‐induced land use change results in much faster net erosion rates, of the order of 1 mm year−1 under conventional agriculture. Accelerated erosion on agricultural land is mainly due to water and tillage. Soil conservation is the practice of minimizing soil loss while maximizing agricultural production. It includes agronomic or mechanical practices aimed at reducing erosion to natural, geological rates, in equilibrium with long‐term soil formation rates.
