Divide and Rule (divide et impera in Latin) is a very old political strategy. It basically means that you divide the population into manageable chunks and that makes it impossible for them to come together and fight against the sovereign authority. This strategy is also used in economics and society.

divide and rule. phrase. You use divide and rule to refer to a policy which is intended to keep someone in a position of power by causing disagreements between people who might otherwise unite against them. [disapproval] Ministers will offer inducements to some, in an attempt to divide and rule.

Divide and rule policy is commonly said to be the reason of The partition of India and Pakistan which is false. A good example is of the division of Bengal by the British. This was done to bring distrust among Hindus and Muslims and also to break the swaraj movement in Bengal. Satisfied? Now go learn from text book and don't forget to thank me. Ciao
