all solids expand on heating due to change in inter atomic separation .this is called the expansion of solids.

thermal expansion have three types -

1. linear expansion:it is the increase in length of a solid on heating.
2.superficial expansion:it is the in surface area of a solid on heating.
3.cubical expansion:it is the increase in volume of the solid on heating

.....

Like steel and iron are melted to make different materials.....

In this case , the intermolecular spaces gets increased and hence the expansion takes place.....

Solids expansion is quite dangerous as a lot of heat is produced....
