• Foods should be preserved because several microorganisms cause diseases in plants like, rice, wheat, potato, apple and others.
• Those diseases can reduce the yield of crops.
• They can be controlled by using different chemicals to kill the microbes.
• Microorganisms spoil our food, and spoil food emits bad taste and cause harmful diseases.
• Food can be preserved in the following ways :-
➽ Chemical methods :-
Salts, oils, sodium benzoate are some common chemicals used in preservation of meat, jams, squashes, to check their spoilage.
➽ Preservation by sugar :-
Sugar is used to preserve jellies, jams and squashes, it reduces the moisture and stop the growth of microbes.
➽ Preservation by oil and vinegar :-
These are used in vegetables, fishes, meats and fruits to preserve.
➽ Storage and packing :-
Dry fruits and vegetables are preserved by packing and storing in sealed air tight packets.
➽ Heat and cold temperature :-
Milk and water are boiled to kill microbes in it. Foods are kept in fridges to reduce the growth of microbes.
