Mahatma Gandhi was the leader who guided India towards Independence. India was under the British rule for over 250 years. Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in 1915 at the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale.

Gandhi's contribution to the Indian freedom movement cannot be measured in words. He, along with other freedom fighters, compelled the British to leave India. His policies and agendas were non-violent and his words were the source of inspiration for millions.

Gandhiji tried hard to free India. One of his best policies was Non Violence or Ahimsa. He said "I will follow non violence...only when I have to opt out between cowerdice and violence, I choose violence".

According to the Rowlatt Act of 1919, Indians were arrested without any warrant. Gandhiji launched the Satyagraha movement in 1919 due to this reason.

He launched the Non Cooperation Movement in 1920 due to the Jallianwalah Bagh tragedy and to restore the old status of the Caliph of Turkey. He merged the Non Cooperation movement with the Khilafat movement of the Muslims, thus Hindu and Muslims united.
The Non Cooperation movement was suspended due to the Chauri Chaura incidence in 1922.

He launched the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930
