Heterogeneous catalysis is a phenomenon in which a solid material increases the rate of a chemical reaction but is not part of the overall stoichiometric equation of the reaction. Heterogeneous catalysis is catalysis in which the catalyst does not take part in the reaction that it increases.

Heterogeneous Catalysis : When the reactant and catalyst are in different phase, it is said to be heterogeneous catalysis.

The heterogeneous catalyst is generally a solid and the reactants may either be gases or liquids. The solid catalyst is added to the reaction mixture. It does not dissolve in the reacting system. The reaction accurs on surface of solid catalyst.
