The human settlements depend upon the following factors:
1. Availability of water
2. Availability of transportation services
3. Topography
4. Climatic conditions.
Human settlements in India are unevenly distributed because of the above factors.
1. Nucleated settlements are found in the Ganga river basin due to amount of water, transportation services, mild climatic conditions and fertile land due to the sediments brought by river Sutluj and it's tributaries.
2. Human settlements are dispersed in the northern and north eastern region of India due to rigid topography caused by the Himalayan range and poorly developed transportation services.
3. The western region of Rajasthan also has dispersed settlements due to extreme weather conditions..
