Answer:

NC was formed in December, 1885 with W.C.Bannerjee as the first president and A.O.Hume as general secretary at Mumbai in a session attended by 72 delegates. In the intial years, it was the moderates who remained at the helm and raised the consciousness through economic critiques and the major highlight was Dadabhai Naoroji's " Poverty & Unbritish Rule of India." Also, they fought for the Civil services and councils to comprise of Indians with varying success rates. However, they flattered to deceive after the partition of Bengal in 1905 due to "administrative reasons" and were upstaged by the extremists led by the trinity of Lal/Bal/Pal at this juncture. There were however differences between the extremists and moderates which led to Surat split in 1907 and subsequently to a patchup at the Lucknow session in 1916 after realising their folly and thereby setting the stage for Gandhian era.The fight for the undoing of Bengal division was filled with various ingenious techniques like the burning of foreign cloth, social boycott of those working under British. Techniques like these were used to the hilt by Gandhi during non-violent phase whch started in late 1910's and continued almost till 1947. Some of the major victories were obtained through Non -Cooperation movement,Civil Disobedience and Quit India movement among others. At the same time, INC displayed its vision for rebuilding the society post -independence through the Nehru report in 1928, passing resolutions on fundamental rights and also National Economic Policy in the Karachi session in 1931.

Therefore, it is easy to note that INC played the most crucial role in the struggle for independence. However, this should not mean that others did not play any kind of role because there were phases in the struggle when it was almost inactive & at that time, others filled the void almost successfully in their own way making sure that the people would not be restless.
