Answer:

74th Indian Independence Day 2020: This year India would have achieved 73 years of freedom and marks the 74th Indian Independence Day. India pays respect to all leaders who fought for India's freedom in the past. On this day Prime Minister of India hoists tricolour at the Red Fort, Old Delhi, and will deliver a speech to the nation. Various cultural programs involving schools and organisations are held in Delhi. But this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the celebrations will be different.

No doubt it was not easy for India to get freedom from British rule. But our political leaders, freedom fighters, and people together participated in the freedom struggle and were determined to gain independence.

On15 August i.e. Independence Day is a gazetted holiday that means the national, state, and local government offices, post offices, and banks remain closed. Even stores and other businesses and organisations reduced their opening hours or may be closed.

Answer:

NEW DELHI: The country would be celebrating its Independence Day on Saturday.

Every year, with the arrival of August 15, confusion occurs over the number of years country has been independent and which Independence Day is this year.

Many people are confused if this is India's 73rd Independence Day, or 74th. The source of confusion lies in not knowing the difference between "Independence Day" and "year of Independence".

India became an independent nation on August 15, 1947. India completed one year of independence on August 15, 1948; 10 years of independence on August 15, 1958; 20 years of independence on August 15, 1968; and 70 years of independence on August 15, 2017.

In 2020, India completed 73 years as an independent nation. In other words, we exclude 1947 and start our count from 1948.

However, when we calculate the number of Independence Day the country has celebrated, we also include August 15, 1947, making it our 74th Independence Day.
