Intensive systems require a high degree of technical and management skill, enabling fish to be produced on a predictable volume basis to correspond with the needs of modern food processing and distribution. It is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture.

Intensive fish farming is the technique in which large number of fish are kept in order to get maximum amount of output from the system. Natural productivity of the system is zero. Fish are fed artificially by providing feed which can be farm made or commercial feed. Water of the system may become unfit for the growth of fish so it must be replenished in order to ensure the adequate amount of oxygen in it. Cages and ponds are used for intensive fish farming. Most common fish being farmed by this technique are Grass carp, cat fish and Pangasius.
