Explanation:

Ions

Charged element are defined as ions. Ion can't

When electrons are gained or lost by any element, ions are yielded.

There are two types of ions-

Cation

Anion

When any element gain electrons, cation are formed. Eg. Cl+e- =Cl-

When any element loses electrons anion are formed. Eg Na=Na(positive)+e-

Cation moves to anode plate while anion moves to cathode plate.

Ions can also be formed by dissociation of any compound like HCl dissociates in H+ and Cl-.

polyatomic ion

A polyatomic ion, also known as a molecular ion, is a charged chemical species composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded or of a metal complex that can be considered to be acting as a single unit. The prefix poly- means "many," in Greek, but even ions of two atoms are commonly referred to as polyatomic

\huge\bigstar\underline\mathfrak{Ions}

These are charged particles ( species ) formed by atoms by loss or gain of electrons in valence shells.

Types :

These are of two types :

  • Cations :

→These are positively charged ions. These are formed by loss of electrons by atoms from their valence shells.

Example :

Na+

Ca²+

Al³+

  • Anions :

→These are negatively charged ions formed by gain of electrons by atoms in their valence shells.

Example :

Cl-

O²-

N³-

Polyatomic ions :

These are the ions formed by two or more atoms and behaving as a single unit in any chemical reaction.

Example :

Hydroxide - OH-

Carbonate - CO3²-

Bicarbonate - HCO3-

Sulphate - SO4²-
