Irom Sharmila is a human right activist who raised her voice against the discrimination of human rights in Maanipur. She continued her hunger strike for 16 years against the abuse of rights in Manipur, and against the armed forces who shot and killed 10 innocent people at a bus stop.

Irom Chanu Sharmila is also known as the
"Iron Lady" or "Mengoubi"
which means "the fair one". She is a political activist, civil rights
activist, and a poet from the Indian state of Manipur.
An insurgent group bombed a column of Assam Rifles in Malom Tulihal Makha on November 1, 2000. The next day, the battalion gunned down ten innocent civilians at a bus stand in Malom.
So Irom Sharmila started a fast against the draconian law, Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. The Act allows the Army to kill, arrest anyone in "disturbed areas". She started her hunger strike on 2 November 2000 and ended it after 16 long years on 9 August, 2016.
