A lysosome is a membrane-bound cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes. Lysosomes are involved with various cell processes. They break down excess or worn-out cell parts. If the cell is damaged beyond repair, lysosomes can help it to self-destruct in a process called programmed cell death, or apoptosis.

Lysosomes are known as the suicidal bag of the cell because it is capable of destroying its own cell in which it is present. It contains many hydrolytic enzymes which are responsible for the destruction process. This happens when either the cell is aged or gets infected by foreign agents like any bacteria or virus.

Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles with roles in processes involved in degrading and recycling cellular waste, cellular signaling, and energy metabolism. Defects in genes encoding lysosomal proteins cause lysosomal storage disorders, in which enzyme replacement therapy has proved successful.
