एक बार सीता ने शिव जी का धनुष उठा लिया था जिसे परशुराम के अतिरिक्त और कोई नहीं उठा पाता था। राजा जनक ने यह निर्णय लिया कि जो भी शिव का धनुष उठा पाएगा सीता का विवाह उसी से होगा।

सीता के स्वयंवर के लिए घोषणाएं कर दी गई। स्वयंवर में भगवान राम और लक्ष्मण ने भी प्रतिभाग किया। वहां पर कई और राजकुमार भी आए हुए थे पर कोई भी शिव जी के धनुष को नहीं उठा सका।

राजा जनक हताश हो गए और उन्होंने कहा कि “क्या कोई भी मेरी पुत्री के योग्य नहीं है?” तब महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने भगवान राम को शिव जी के धनुष की प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाने को कहा। गुरु की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए भगवान राम शिव जी के धनुष की प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाने लगे और धनुष टूट गया।

इस प्रकार सीता जी का विवाह राम से हुआ। भारतीय समाज में राम और सीता को आदर्श दंपत्ति (पति पत्नी) का उदाहरण समझा जाता है। राम सीता का जीवन प्रेम, आदर्श, समर्पण और मूल्यों को प्रदर्शित करता है।
