ANSWER :

MECHANICAL WAVES :

The waves requiring a medium to travel, are called Mechanical waves.

EXAMPLE :

Sound waves are mechanical waves.

They cannot travel through vacuum.

Mechanical waves are also called as "Elastic waves".

Mechanical waves are the

ideal type of waves as there is no transfer of matter.

Sound waves, waves in a slinky and pressure waves are all examples of this phenomenon.

A mechanical wave requires an initial energy input to be created.

Once this initial energy is added, the wave will travel through the medium until all the energy has been transferred.

One important property of mechanical waves is that their amplitudes possess a dimensionless form.

Displacement is divided by reduced wave length.

EXAMPLES :

Waves in a slinky, twist waves and surface waves are also mechanical waves.
