Mysore was previously known as Mysuru and is one of the most populated cities of Karnataka. It is located at the height of 740 metres. It is situated at the foothills of Chamundi Hills. It lies towards the southwest of Bangalore and covers an area of 152 square kilometres.
Mysore served as the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore till 1956, starting from six centuries ahead which was 1399. The Wadiyar dynasty ruled the kingdom. King Yaduraya Wodeyar was the first Maharaja of Mysore. The Wadiyars were of Lingayat faith, and they promoted it as their state religion. The Kingdom of Mysore was considered as a realm in southern India. The kingdom was initially served as a vassal state of the Vijaynagara Empire.
