Answer:

The First Opium War pinyin: , also known as the Opium War or the Anglo-Chinese War, was a series of military engagements fought between Britain and the Qing dynasty of China. The immediate issue was Chinese official seizure of opium stocks at Canton to stop the banned opium trade, and threatening the death penalty for future offenders. The British government insisted on the principles of free trade, equal diplomatic recognition among nations, and backed the merchants' demands. The British navy defeated the Chinese using technologically superior ships and weapons, and the British then imposed a treaty that granted territory to Britain and opened trade with China.

Explanation:

Opium Wars are the two armed conflicts in China in the mid-19th century between the forces of western countries and Quing dynasty. The first Opium War (1839-42) was fought between China and Britain, and the second Opium War (1856-60) also known as Arrow War, was fought by Britain and France against China. In both wars foreign powers were victorious and gained some priviliges and consessions in China. The conflicts marked the unequal treaties on Quing Sovereignty that helped weaken and topple the dynasty in favour of republican China in the start of 20th century.
