As the name suggests they are fossils and thus will drain away easily with no time and should be conserved and petroleum is a fossil fuel too

Petroleum is a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are non renewable resources i.e they are exhaustible. They are the only consistent source of energy as the renewable sources of energy are still under development. They may exhaust in the near future so that is there is a need to conserve them. There are steps being taken to preserve them but they are not enough.
