Plants which trap insects and digest them for obtaining Nitrogen. These plants are called insectivorous plants.Good examples of such plants are:-
Pitcher plants shaped in the form of a pitcher, Venus flytrap, Nepenthes, Drosera, etc which all are capable of preparing their own food by performing photosynthesis but catch insects to fulfill their nutritional needs. They lure flies, honey bees, rats, rodents and other small creatures which get attracted to the plant because of its appearance, fragrance, scent, colour, etc. When they perch on the plant or touch the plant's Pitcher's brim, the lid of the Pitcher shuts and the insect is trapped. The inner surface of the Pitcher has long hair like structures which does not even allow the insect to even move. Then the inner walls of the Pitcher secretes some digestive enzymes and juices which digest the insect. This way they lure, trap and eat insects and other small animals. They are the most dangerous plants as they hunt insects. The lid of the Pitcher remains shut till the insect is completely digested leaving no chance for the insect to escape. They are really fascinating and their mechanism of catching insects is awesome and interesting.
