Position of hydrogen has always been a controversy .
It acts as both a metal and a non metal.
In general, we consider it to be a group I element but sometimes it is also shown on the top of group 17 as it acts as a non metal.
This Is because hydrogen is one elctron short to attain the nearest nobel gas configuration just like halogens.
But in the end , hydrogen is the lightest element after all so it is placed at the top of group 1 with the alkali metals.
