POTENTIAL ENERGY :

Energy possessed by a body by virtue of it's position is called potential energy

Mathematically potential energy is expressed as the product of three terms , they are mass of the body , acceleration due to gravity , displacement produced in the position of the body

PE= mgh

Potential energy depends on mass and displacement of the body

For different masses and different heights , potential energy changes

UNITS :

C.G.S system = Erg or dyne

S.I system = Joule or N-m

EXAMPLES :

Stone at some height

Compressed spring

Stretched bow

NOTE :

Potential energy of the body on the surface of the earth is zero

Potential energy and work have same units

When height of the body increases , then the Potential energy of the body increases

When the height of the body decreases , the Potential energy of the body decreases
