  • Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Maidan also known as August Kranti Maidan is the place where Mahatma Gandhi delivered his speech marking the beginning of the Quit India Movement. Mahatma along with other leaders gathered here on August 8 and 9, 1942.
  • Several national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Abdul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were arrested.
  • The first half of the movement was peaceful with demonstrations and processions. The peaceful protest was carried till Mahatma Gandhi’s release.
  • The Congress was declared an unlawful association, leaders were arrested and its offices all over the country were raided and their funds were frozen.
  • The Viceroy’s Council of Muslims, Communist Party and Americans supported Britishers.
  • The second half of the movement was violent with raids and setting fire at post offices, government buildings and railway stations. Lord Linlithgow adopted the policy of violence.
  • The British refused to grant immediate independence and stated that it could only be granted after the war ended. Finally, India got independence in 1947.

2 After the failure of the Cripps Mission to secure indian support for the british war effort Gandhi made a call to do or die in his quit india speech delievered in Bombay on 8 August 1942 at the Gowalia Tank Maidan.

3 The all India Congress Committee launched a mass protest demanding what gandhi called an orderly british withdrawal from india.

4 Even though it was at war the british were prepared to act.

5 Almost the entire leadership of the Indian National Congress was imprisoned without trial within hours of Gandhi speech.

6 Most spent the rest of the war in prison and out of contact with the masses.

7 The british had the support of the viceroy Council of the All Indian Muslim League,the Hindu Mahasabha, the princely states, the Indian Imperial Police, the British Indian Army, and the Indian Civil service.

8 Many indian businessmen profiting from heavy wartime spending did not support the Quit Movement India.
