This type of synthetic fibre is obtained from coal, water, air and petroleum. Polyester is made from repeating units of chemical known as esters. Polyester is easy to wash and it remains wrinkle free and it is quite suitable in making dress material. Polyester is used in making ropes, nets, raincoats, jackets, etc.

\:\:\: \huge{\underline{\boxed{\sf{Rayon -  \: }}}}

  • It is not purely synthetic as it is prepared from a natural polymer , cellulose as a starting material.

  • It is chemically identical to cotton ,but has shine like silk.

  • It is available in three varieties .viscose, cuprammonium, acetate rayon.

  • It resembles silk in appearance so called artificial silk.

  • Used in making textiles, carpets, curtains, surgical dressing, tyre industry.

  • Blended with cotton or wool.

  • It is the first totally synthetic fibre.

  • It is a polyamide fiber having large number of amide(CONH-) group in its molecule .

  • It is very strong and has high tensile strength.(for making climbing ropes, parachutes, fabrics)

  • It has good elasticity ,is flexible and can be stretched ( For socks, stocking)

  • It is wrinkle resistant(for dress materials).

  • It dries quickly (does not absorb much water)

  • it is made of repeating units of a chemical called ester. (COO group) (Fruits get their smell from esters.)

  • Terylene and Dacron belong to this class.

  • It is used for making textiles, fabrics, bottles.

  • PET s a common form of polyester Its full form is Polyethylene teriphthalate.

  • It is used for making bottles, films ,wires and many other useful products.

  • Blended fabrics like terrycot, Polywool, polycot, terrywool are made by mixing these fibres.
