Write about Rutherford's alpha scattering experiment.

  • The initial discovery was made by Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden in 1909 when they performed the gold foil experiment in collaboration with Rutherford, in which they fired a beam of alpha particles (helium nuclei) at foils of gold leaf only a few atoms thick.

Write observations and conclusions too made by Rutherford.

Conclusion of Rutherford's scattering experiment:-

  • Most of the space inside the atom is empty because most of the α-particles passed through the gold foil without getting deflected. Very few particles were deflected from their path, indicating that the positive charge of the atom occupies very little space.

Answer:

1. Rutherford concluded from the alpha particle scattering experiment that :-

a) Most of the alpha particles passed undeflected, so majority of space inside the atom is empty.

b) Since very few particles deflected, hence the positive charge of an atom occupies a very little space.

c) Even lesser number of alpha particles were deflected by 180° (complete deflection) , this indicates that positive charges is concertrated in a very small volume called nucleus.
