hey buddy....

January 4, 1936, Savitri was born in Chirravuru, Guntur district, Madras Presidency, which is now a part of Andhra Pradesh. Tragedy was not new to her given that she had to lead a difficult life right from her childhood.

Her father died when she was just six months old. Savitri's mother decided to take both Savitri and Maruti (her older sibling) to live with her elder sister and family. Savitri's uncle Kommareddy Venkataramaiah Chowdhury was convinced about taking Savitri's family in as he and his wife couldn't have a child.

One day, when Savitri pursued her friend, who was in her Bharatnatyam class, to come and play with her, the friend refused. Later, Savitri's uncle Chowdhury realised that if Savitri learnt Bharatanatyam, she could take part in functions and earn money for the family.

He dragged Savitri to the Bharatnatyam class, but the naughty girl that she was, Savitri didn't want to pay any attention to it. After being ridiculed by her dance master, Savitri, who never liked being looked down upon, learnt the art form by observing him teach.

Savitri then took formal Bharatanatyam training and eventually worked in theatre for a company run by Kongara Jaggaiah. At the age of 12, she, along with her uncle Chowdhury, made an unsuccessful trip to Chennai (then Madras) to find work in cinema.

After giving up, Chowdhury and Savitri went back to their village. Later, in 1950, she is cast as the heroine in Samsaram. However, after her umpteen number of retakes to perfect one shot, she was eventually thrown out of the film.

She then played minor roles in Roopavati and Patala Bhairavi, before making a mark as a second heroine in Telugu film Pelli Chesi Choodu in 1952. In the same year, she was featured in Tamil film Kalyanam Pannipaar, which was the first Tamil film in which Savitri appeared in a colour sequence. It was also the first film in which she played the lead role.

She then continued to act in Tamil and Telugu films, and went on to deliver hits after hits. In 1954, Savitri made her Hindi debut with Bahut Din Huye, in which she was seen alongside Madhubala and Lalita Pawar.

Apart from playing female lead roles, she also played a dual role in Vanangamudi that released in 1957. She was also seen in Malayalam and Kannada films.

In no time, she had signed her 100th film - Konjum Salangai, which was shot as a full-length colour film. She also made her directorial debut with Chinnari Papalu in 1968, which went on to be a huge hit. The film was also the first film to have an all-woman crew.

Having ruled the roost in a male-dominated industry for nearly two decades, Savitri's career went downhill in the 1970s. After her failed marriage with Gemini Ganesan, she became an alcoholic and developed diabetes and high blood pressure.

Savitri breathed her last at the age of 45, after being in a coma for 19 months.

hope it helps you
