the Northern Plains are divided into four regions:-

  • The Bhabar Belt.
  • The Terai Belt
  • The bhangar belt
  • The khadar belt.

Explanation:-

(i) The Terai Belt :- south of thebhabar belt,the river re-emerge and create a marshy, wet and swampy region .this region is know as terai. terai region is one of the relief feature of northern plain.

(ii). The Bhabar Belt:- The Bhabar belt is comparatively narrow in the east and extensive in the western and north-western hilly region.

Bhabar is a narrow belt about 8-10km wide running in East to west direction along the foot of the Shiwaliks of Himalayan Range with a remarkable continuity from the Indus to the Tista.

(iii) The khadar belt:- Khadar areas are prone to flooding and sometimes include portions of former river-beds that became available for agriculture when a river changed course.

(iv) The bhangar belt:-They lie above the flood plains. Bhangar is the largest part of the northern plain and is composed of the oldest alluvial soil. . They resemble terraces. The soil of this region is locally known as kankar and is composed of calcareous deposits
