Subramanian Bharati, born on 11th December 1882 in the village of Ettayapuram (now known as Thoothukoodi, was a Tamil writer journalist, poet, Indian independence activist, a polyglot and a social reformer. Famously known as Mahakavi Bharati, he was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and is regarded as one of the greatest and eminent Tamil literary figures of all time. His various works comprised fiery songs sparking patriotism in India’s Independence movement. Subramanian Bharati had his early education in Varanasi and Tirunelveli and he had worked as a journalist with several newspapers, comprising Bala Bharata,
The Hindu Vijaya, Chakravarthini, Indi and the Swadesamitran and India. In the year 1908, an arrest warrant was issued against Bharati by the British govt. for his revolutionary writings, compelling him to escape to Pondicherry, where he lived until 1918. Bharathi's influence on Tamil literature is phenomenal. Though he was proficient in about fourteen languages, his favourite language was Tamil. He was prolific in his work quality He covered social, political, and `spiritual themes. The 'poems and songs' and poems composed by 'Bharati' are very frequently used in 'Tamil cinema' and have become staples in the musical and literary repertoire of 'Tamil artistes all through the world'.
