Sufis are first and foremost Muslims, adhering to the same theological principals of Islam as any other Muslim would.

Secondly, Sufis are scholars as well just like other scholar of Islam. Most scholars in Islam have a distinct speciality albeit being proficient in other streams of knowledge as well. Ex:Sheikh-ul-Hadeeth is a person who is a scholar(Aalim) having speciality in the knowledge of hadith (Ilm-al-Hadith). Sheikh-ul-Quranis a person who is a scholar having having speciality in the knowledge of Quran. Faqih is an Aalim having speciality in Fiqh(jurisprudence). Likewise, a Sufi is a scholar(Aalim) having speciality in the knowledge of Tazakiyyah.

Quran states 4 prophetic responsibilities: recitation of ayahs, tazakiyyah, teaching Quran and teaching hikmah(wisdom).

Tazakiyyah can be loosely translated in english to mean purification/cleansing of heart. It is one of the prophetic responsibilities. Purpose is to purify the heart so that one acts upon Shariah from the core of his heart— instead of only following the letter of the law also follows the spirit of the law. Sufis are the specialists that teach this important body of knowledge.

I hope this answers your question.

First of all, the teachings of Sufis are nothing more than attaining the highest possible level of piety, simplicity, righteousness and gratitude. Sufis from the east to the west have the same message just spoken and written differently. Another aspect is that of self-realization. But that comes after a certain level of age and experiences. For a 7th grader, the study of writers would be more lucrative than that of saints, for the purpose of building a certain base of mature understanding.
