Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain.

Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it has elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH). It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and infrastructure. Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. Some governments have made efforts since the 1970s to reduce the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere with positive results. Nitrogen oxides can also be produced naturally by lightning strikes, and sulfur dioxide is produced by volcanic eruptions

Air pollution like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can cause respiratory diseases, or can make these diseases worse. ... The pollution that causes acid rain can also create tiny particles. When these particles get into people's lungs, they can cause health problems, or can make existing health problems worse.

Acid rain :

__________

• Definition :

The acid rain is a type of rainfall where the rainwater has lower pH levels (< 7) or acidic in nature.

Cause :

- The acid rain mainly occurs due to the environmental pollution.

- Different types of chemical pollutants produces acidic compounds in the upper atmosphere.

- These acidic substances are mixed with the rainwater which causes the acid rain.

• Harmful effects :

- The acidic substances of the acid rain is lethal for both the plants and animals of our environment. The acidic substances can cause serious injuries and can even cause painful death,if the acid has high concentration.

- Even this is harmful for the human society also. Because, human skin cannot tolerate the effects of the acid.

- The soil and other environmental resources are damaged by this acid rain. Because, acid is highly reactive with every type of substances present in our environment.

And many more.
