Patliputra was a flourishing town with numerous charitable institutes
Although the people were wealthy they led simple lives
generally observing the Buddhist rules of conduct
Hindu Gods and Goddesses where depicted on coins and also in sculptures and paintings
the penal code was mild and offence were ordinary punished by fines only .
