The Swadeshi movement was launched in the early 20th century in India as a consequence of the decision taken by the British government to partition Bengal. The two aims of this movement were to boycott the British goods and  to use Swadeshi goods.

The Bengal province at that time had a population of 78.5 million. it comprised of two major parts, one- West Bengal and two -  East Bengal and Assam.

In Assam, Khadi was popularized as a weapon against colonial rule.  Mohammed Tayabulle was a prominent leader in Assam. He wrote - Communal disharmony and untouchability are the weapons of the same disease in India.  The cure of the disease is Khadi non- violence.

Although Khadi was not popular in Assam, it was famous for spinning and weaving.
