"The Pallavas architecture has two ages or phases which are Rock cut carved and second was the structural age or part.

It was the earlier stage of Dravidian architecture. The architecture took its rich form and face with some famous rock carved temples and rock sculptures. The rock cut stage was from 610 AD TO 668 AD. The pillars were designed with the faces of lion as its base. There were structures carved as pillars hauled out of mountain faces and fronts. They were based on the type and structure of the Jain Temple during this phase. For example, Temples at Mandagapattu and Pallavaram. Another structures in this category were free hooked and standing monolithic shrines.

Second phase was structural age where free standing shrines were well built with stone and mortar. These were built as beautiful scriptures with granite stones and granite slabs. During the earlier stage of this structural age, the structure and its architect was deeply experimented, for example, Shore Temple, and later, the structures reached their best versions, for example, Brihadeeswarar Temple of the Cholas at Thanjavur."
