Salient features of genetic code:

  • The code is triplet. 61 codons code for amino acids and 3 codons do not code for any AA called stop codons
  • It is degenerate. some AA are coded by more than one codon
  • No punctuations. Codon is read in contigous fashion.
  • Code is nearly universal. eg : bacteria to human UUU code for phenylalanine
  • AUG has dual functions. It codes for methionine and also acts as a initiator codon
  • UAA UAG UGA are stop / terminator codons.
