The indigo planters gave loans for cultivating crops, which they had to sell to various factories at low prices. Latet the planter informed the peasants that loans could be repaid only by supplying indigo to them at fixed rates. This inhan oppression of indigo cultivators forced them to revolt against the british in the Nadia district of Bengal in 1859.

3. Led by Digambar Biswas and Bishnu Charan Biswas, the ryots of Nadia district gave up indigo cultivation in September 1859. Factories were burnt down and the revolt spread.
