A coral island is a kind of island formed from coral detritus and associated organic material. Thought many of the world's coral islands are found in the Pacific Ocean, India also has a few of these formations are seen in India as well. The coastline of India with it's islands is approximately 7517 km and the mainland coast runs about 6100 km. These reefs in India are one of the most dynamic and one of the oldest ecosystems of India. They act as a sanctuary to the marine life and also play an important role in protecting the coastline from erosion.
Coral reefs in India can be found in the Lakshadweep Islands, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gulf of Mannar, Gulf of Kutch etc
