Ghana is a country in West Africa. It is the country nearest to the centre of the world (ie the point where the equator meets the greenwich meridian). Ghana is bounded by the Gulf of Guinea to the south, The Republic of Togo to the east, La Cote D'Ivoire to the west and Burkina Faso to the north. On 6th March 1957, the British colony of Gold Coast became the Independent nation of Ghana. It was the first British African colony to gain independence. Ghana was named after a powerful African empire that flourished along the upper Niger River from the 4th to the 13th century. The area of Ghana is 238,447 sq km (92,098 sq mi) The population of Ghana is (2000 est.): 18,837,000. Accra is the capital city of Ghana, it has been the capital since 1877. The Osu Castle (formerly The Christianburg Castle) in Osu, Accra is the seat of government. Ghana is home to some 75 different tribes; the most numerous are the Akan. English is the official language. Christians make about 63% of the population.Muslims constitute about 16% and 21% of the population are Traditional believers. The New Cedi(¢)is the official Ghanaian currency. Among the many tourist attractions in Ghana are the Kakum National Park near Cape Coast. There you will find the canopy walkway (one of the only two in Africa). You can see and admire different species of animals while walking on the canopy walkway. Also in the Central region, you can visit the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles which were built over 500 years ago. The Paga Crocodile Park is another tourist attraction. It can be found in Upper Ghana. There, you can ride on harmless crocodiles.
