Question :

========

Write the factors responsible for formation of soil.

Answer:

======

Soil is formed from the rocks by a process called weathering. Weathering is the process of breaking down of rocks or other materials into smaller particles due to long exposure to the different factors of atmosphere.

The major weathering agents include -Wind , water and temperature. Alternate heating and cooling due to heat of the sun and rain causes the rocks to crack.These cracks get filled with water .The water in the cracks freezes due to severe cold in winters. As water expands when frozen , ice breaks the rocks into smaller pieces by sheer pressure. Roots of trees and other plants , as they grow in size , also helps to break rocks. Day and night variations and the action of wind and flowing water add to the weathering process. The weathering is slow and continuous process .Eventually , the rocks are converted into soil ,which mixes with the dead plants and animals to form humus.Weathering takes millions of years.
