The famine of Bengal from 1770 to 1772 is known as the Great Bengal Famine of 1770. The famine had a drastic impact on the lower part of the Gangetic plain in India starting from Bihar right up to Bengal. The areas covered also included the present day West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and some parts of Assam. These areas were then under the governance of the British East India Company. It was one of the worst famines that affected the country. A failed monsoon was said to be the primary reason for the famine resulting in the death of close to 10 million people.
