1919 - The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

1914- India Participated in the World War 1

Explanation:

In the year 1919

  • The Jallianwala Bagh shooting took place in Jallianwala Bagh, in the province of Amritsar, Punjab, on 13th April, 1919, the Interim Brigade General, Reginald Dyer directed British Indian Army soldiers to aim their weapons at the unarmed  Indian civilians, thus killing atleast 379 people and injuring more than 1000 other people.
  • Dyer banned all meetings on Sunday 13 April 1919, convinced that a major uprising might take place. This message was not disseminated, to all people, with several villagers gathering in Bagh celebrating the important Baisakhi Indian festival and peacefully protesting the arrest & deportation of 2 national politicians, Saifuddin Kitchlew & Satyapal

In the year 1914

  • In 1914, British India was split into regions under strict British jurisdiction – approximately two thirds of its subcontinent – and the so-called 'colonial states,' whose rulers owe the British King-Emperor loyalty but governed their territory to differing degrees of domestic dominance.
  • Since the German occupation of France in the Battle of Marne at the beginning of September 1914 by the increasingly Anglo-French forces, it became evident that the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) needed more troops – and faster. The Indian army was the only source of skilled combat forces and having all the available divisions, with the regular British army  serving in France.
  • In early October 1914 sufficient Indian army battalions were sent to France from India for forming 2 infantry divisions. Such units formed the Indian Army, which played an significant role in almost all of the battles (the 1st &2nd Ypres battles, & the Neuve Chapelle battles, Loos & Aubers Ridge battles) along with Indian cavalry regiments.
