The journey of a river starts from high mountains. The ice on the mountains melts and floes down in streams. The streams join together and form a brook. The brook is quite active and noisy from birth till it joins a river and becomes one with it.

It goes through 3 stages - Upper course, middle course and lower course. It originates from a glacier or lake which is called the source. Normally the source is on a mountain. The part of its journey where it travels down the mountain is called the upper course. In the middle course it forms meanders. The lower course is the delta region. Finally it reaches the sea/ocean. The place where it opens up into the ocean is called the mouth. In the river Ganges, Utrrakhand and Himachal Pradesh is the Upper course. Uttar pradesh and bihar is the middle course. West Bengal and Bangladesh is the Lower course.
