This defect is possible only in compounds of metals that show variable oxidation states.In some crystals, positive metal ions are missing from their original lattice sites. The extra negative charge is balanced by the presence of cation of the same metal with higher oxidation state than that of missing cation

This defect is due to less number of cations than anions.These are of two types-. In this defect cations may be missing from their lattice sites.The extra negative charge may be balanced by some metal ion having two positive charges instead of one . Generally transition metals show this defect.
