Restriction enzymes are named based on the organism in which they were discovered. For example, the enzyme Hind III was isolated from Haemophilus influenzae, strain Rd. The fourth letter typically comes from the bacterial strain designation.

Dear Student,
● Restriction enzymes -
- Restriction enzymes (aka restriction endonucleases) are enzymes that cleave DNA into fragments at specific sites within molecules.
- Till date, approximately 3000 restriction enzymes have been discovered.
● Nomenclature of Restriction enzymes -
- Restriction endonucleases are named according to specific nomenclature.
- First 3 letters indicate genus & species of the bacterium from which it's derived, next letter indicates the strain of the organism & lastly comes the order in which the enzyme was discovered.
- For example - In EcoRI, Eco stands for E.coli, R stands for strain Rd & I means it's 1st enzyme to be discovered in that series.
Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
