Hello Friend!!
In Chile Salvador Allende had been serving as the President from 1970-73. Then there was a military coup in 1973 wherein Salvador Allende's former democratic government was overthrown by the military and General Augusto Pinochet took over as the President of the country, and ruled it for 17 years. Amongst the people who opposed the coup and wanted democracy to be restored was General Alberto Bachelet. General Bachelet was subsequently imprisoned and tortured on Pinochet’s orders. Then finally there was a referendum in 1988 where the people openly opposed the Pinochet government since they had not forgotten their old democratic traditions. Political freedom was finally restored in 1990 and Pinochet was tried in the court of law for crimes against humanity. Under the next 4 presidents, military rule was slowly wiped off from the country. In January 2006, Michelle Bachelet , whose family had earlier been tortured by Pinochet, became the country’s first woman President.
